Thoughts on the New Year

‭Happy New Year fam!!! I hope you’ve had some time to rest a little over the holiday season.

At the end of 2023, I came across a scripture (Isaiah‬ ‭53:1‬) ‭which stuck in my mind. It reminded me of a conversation I was having with some of my girls a few days earlier about having a word from God for ourselves.

Isaiah‬ ‭53:1‬ AMPC – WHO HAS believed (trusted in, relied upon, and clung to) our message [of that which was revealed to us]? And to whom has the arm of the Lord been disclosed?

Although this verse is talking about a word that has been proclaimed, it made me think, before a word can be proclaimed, it must first be received by a person.

What word has been revealed to me by God? Do I trust it? How much have I clung to it? Have I received it? Maybe we need to take a step back and ask – Do I even believe that God has a word for me?

I know some churches or ministries have words for the year. You can adopt this, but I believe you can receive a word from God that is tailored to you as well.

Colossians‬ ‭1:9‭-‬10‬ ‭CEV‬‬: We have not stopped praying for you since the first day we heard about you. In fact, we always pray that God will show you everything he wants you to do and that you may have all the wisdom and understanding his Spirit gives. [10] Then you will live a life that honors the Lord, and you will always please him by doing good deeds. You will come to know God even better.

I’d recommend reading up to verse 14 to be honest.

‭‭Matthew‬ ‭7:21‬ ‭AMPC‬‬: Not everyone who says to Me, Lord, Lord, will enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father Who is in heaven.

It is very important to know what God is saying to you. How do you obey what you don’t know? What do you hold on to when times are super hard and discouraging and bleh?
A yoruba proverb says (I think 🤔) – Nkan tẹyẹ jẹ lẹyẹ n gbe fo. This means you are sustained by what you eat or what nurtures you. ‭‭In this context, what you know about God’s will for you and how you feed yourself spiritually is going to be important for your sustenance.

The journey of 2024 is far. You need something to hold you, to carry you through the year. This is not to say the year is going to be hard or impossible or to be a prophet of doom, but there will be moments that life seems to come at you fast, and you need an anchor.
Will your anchor hold in the storms of life? There is but one anchor that doesn’t shake, and that is God’s word.

Write the word(s) down. You might not be sure, but write down what you think God is saying. Ask him to confirm his word.

Sometimes, we weary ourselves doing things God hasn’t asked of us. We get discouraged, worn out, and give up. Having a chat with my bestie, I was reminded of how important it is to know the season of life you’re in. There are different times and seasons in life. ‭‭Ecclesiastes‬ ‭3:1‬ ‭AMPC‬‬: TO EVERYTHING there is a season, and a time for every matter or purpose under heaven.

Doing things out of season requires more effort and can be frustrating without much to show for it. Knowing what the season you’re in, you might better understand your circumstances and how God is working through them to achieve his purpose. You might be less inclined to fight certain things. You might be less inclined to compare yourself to other people and be more content with where you are in your journey.

In summary:
1) Ask God what season you’re in and what he’s doing in and through you.
2) Ask God for a word for you for this season, for directions, encouragement. Write it down.
3) If nothing else, a good thing this year would be to spend more time with God, whatever that looks like for you, and you’ll get to know him better (experentially).

P.S. Life seasons don’t often run in calendar cycles, but this is a new year, so a chance to remind us all 😉

Blugdate – blog update

Hey guys🙋🏽‍♀️🙋🏽‍♀️I know it has been forever and I wish (Oh I do 😩) that I had the perfect excuse but sorry to disappoint. There are reasons, some more valid than others, regarding why I have been AWOL but at the end of the day, they are all excuses and for that I apologise … sincerely 😢 I’d love to promise that this will never happen again but I don’t like break

ing my promises.

Never the less, I’d like to explain or at least share some of my reasons with you so that you understand me better as a person, warts and all.

1. I am a bit (depends on who you ask 😏) of a perfectionist. As such I love things to be a certain way (perfect 😂😂) when I present them to you. This means a lot of effort goes into what I put out there (as it should 😉). This also means that sometimes I find that process overwhelming. And the mere thought of going over things puts me off.

This leads nicely to the next point which is very deep and profound.

2. Sheer laziness … 🤫 I know you guessed it LOL! I can be quite lazy sometimes and when you’re already overwhelmed by the amount of work you have to do to make something just right, laziness is just the enemy. I’m sure many of us can identify with having a busy work/uni/**insert daily activities** life and by the time I get back home, I just want to put my feet up, snuggle under a nice blanket and do nothing. This is no good for having a blog that needs content putting out 😅😅

3. Procrastination… this is the first cousin of laziness and perfectionism or maybe its the product of them🤔🤷🏾‍♀️ I don’t know but they all belong to one big, unhappy family. Due to above mentioned points and the law of self-preservation, I decide I can always do things tomorrow or whenever I ’ve got more ginger/inspiration/time/**insert excuse of the month**

Anyway I’d say those are some of the main reasons why ive been MIA. Now I’m back and better (hopefully).

Here are some of the things that pushed me out of my “stupor”.

1. My own consciousness that this blog is my baby and I need to show it some love

2. My friends checking up on me and asking what’s happened with said baby

3. The end of the year looming ahead of me … asking me ‘What have you fone with your blog this year 🤔😯😒

I’d say of these three things, number 2 was probably one of the key factors that pushed me to give myself a short(ish) target and work towards it.

In terms of what comes next, I’m going to be putting out a short series about an old family (all will be revealed inndue course) and looking at someone from each successive generation. I’ll be looking at some of the things they did and discussing how their ancestors might have influenced them. In essence, it is an exploration of how family impacts on who we are and the decisions we make (in a manner of speaking). I hope you do enjoy it and perhaps learn something from it.

Glossary

AWOL – absent without leave

Ginger – now this is harder; nope not the fruit or whatever class it is. It’s a slang word for motivation.

MIA – missing in action

First of all, introduction

Hallo! Hallo! Top of the evening to you 😀 😀 How’s the new year, month and week going? LOL!

What feels like eons ago, I promised I’ll put a post introducing myself and my blog and I haven’t yet … but the time is NOW *echo’echo’cho’ho’o, like Nigerian movie jingles 😉 * #ifyouknowyouknow I will be outlining what you can expect from the blog because I’m all about #managingexpectations!

My name is Sinmi. I am a newly qualified (in July) doctor, aka FY1; no medical questions allowed #pleaseandthankyou #nocando. My default answer will be see your local GP 😉 😀 I love reading and writing fiction, watching movies and hanging out with friends and family.

it's (3)

For a while now, I’ve wanted to start a blog because of my love for writing, especially because I’ve been ‘slacking’ on the writing front and I want a challenge. I’m also very passionate about everyday life and sometimes have the most random thoughts and what’s better than having random thoughts??? Sharing them with others 😉 🤔 I’m also passionate about mental health; people’s awareness of their own mental health and that of others. There’s a stigma surrounding mental health, particularly in some cultures and societies, so people tend to talk about mental health in a disparaging manner. Nowadays, it’s getting better, people are more open about discussing mental health and seeking help but we still have a long way to go. Phew! That’s my plug on mental health done!

My target audience is everyone who loves life, who thinks they could do with knowing a bit more about mental health and who wants to discuss things that many young people experience. Being Nigerian, I will sometimes address elements of the Nigerian culture and some stereotypes we might have. I do not mean this disrespectfully, neither am I trying to attack nor trivialize the beliefs of some people #honestly #crossmyheart. If I throw shade or shake a table you’re on, simply climb off 🤣🤣

My aim is to post at least monthly on the blog, on the last Thursday of each month. Some months you might get a treat 😀 and get some extra posts because I’m sweet like that. I’ll be doing different types of pieces such as poems, fiction, information pieces, opinion pieces, etc.

I look forward to reading your comments and getting to know you guys and building a community really. As I mentioned in a previous post, please let’s respect everyone on this platform! If there’s ever something you want me to discuss, just write it in a comment or drop me a line!😀😁
